This involved meeting with University researchers for laboratory skills sessions and then going on to do a project in the labs. In the spring term of my second year I undertook a project looking at the effects of pyroglutamate and glutamate on root growth. I gained a feel of what a plant science and molecular biology lab is like in terms of aseptic technique, monitoring plant growth, measuring roots on imagej and making up stock solutions. I also presented my project findings to the plant science and molecular biology research group. Show less

I worked for a week in the biochemistry lab in LEC on their RUBISCO activase project. This involved creating a Bradford assay to make a calibration curve, gel electrophoresis to separate the B1 and B2 isoforms of RUBISCO activase and the use Western blotting to determine the relative absorbances of the isoforms in various samples.

This involved various labs in entomology, integrated pest management and plant pathology that improved my identification skills of nematodes, crops, diseases and insects. A group project to produce a journal article about predatory mites on citrus plants improved my team working skills.
