In this role I was a Senior Policy Advisor specialising in National Marine Conservation Policy. It was my duty to implement relevant principles of the Welsh Environment Act across the work of the entire marine department of NRW – from MPA management, to our marine litter programme through to marine licensing processes. It was also my role to influence, where possible, the work of our partners’ to also embed these principles. To enable the external-facing part of my role, I was a marine grants and funding lead and sat on many external forums and committees. To support these principles, I was specialised in biodiversity enhancements (including natural capital and nature-based solutions), blue carbon and I became the policy lead for marine and coastal habitat restoration.

I co-lead a Reef Restoration Project with the ambition of restoring a reef (damaged during the 2015 El Nino Event) that would surround The Muraka residence: a first-of-its-kind underwater luxury villa. I fully lead this project from scoping through to BAU operations. Communications were essential throughout my role at Conrad: translating environmental risks to economic and guest experience risks for resort owners and management. ExeGesIS SDM is a well respected environmental, ecological and heritage GIS consultancy. Here I gained substantial work experience, giving me an insight into the type of work involved in environmental and ecological consultancy. The responsibilities I was entrusted with included communicating with clients for feedback; testing programs, sites and databases for clients (RAFTs, MMO, habitatsurvey, CAMs); conducting follow-up research on open mosaic habitat sites; using GIS to assist in the creation of a new map planning site; as well as assisting in various projects where possible. At ExeGesIS I also completed a foundation course in GIS (MapInfo); these skills were valuable with the work I was doing there but I know will also help me in future work placements.
