I enjoyed attending the Volunteer Management Institute with Amy. It's clear that Amy is a natural at managing volunteer programs. She is able to engage people, was always organized and prepared for class and speaks passionately about making a difference.

How could any goat owner resist an opportunity to take a short break from customer service and managment roles to learn to make artisanal cheese? How could any goat owner resist an opportunity to take a short break from customer service and managment roles to learn to make artisanal cheese?

I helped a new small animal veterinary practice build relationships with area clients by answering phones, setting reservations and checking clients in and out for appointments, grooming and boarding. I created structure, determined needs and opportunities, coaxed staff-buy in, recruited, trained, motivated and often supervised volunteers at this small up-and-coming spay/neuter clinic, resulting in 100% increase in volunteers in less than 1 year. I created and conducted relevant volunteer orientations. I streamlined processes and added elements of accountability to transform check in and check out for surgery and vaccination clinics I assisting in fundraising efforts I negotiated more than 100 appointments each month, returning messages, and providing client education for pet-related questions. In this volunteer position I learned how to take my managment skills from the corporate world to the non-profit. I led the volunteers as we established a low-cost spay and neuter clinic for pets in low-income families. From the bottom up, I established volunteer roles and created job descriptions, recruited, trained, and supervised volunteers from preparing our building to opening the clinic to routine operations. I also learned the basics of fundraising and was learned a bit of grant writing. Show less

Recruit, train and motivate team for a temporary Halloween retail store. We built the store from shelving up in one day, stocked and merchandised it, hired and trained management and staff. In many ways this was very like managing volunteers, as the motivation to remain in this short-term position had much to do with constant recognition and creating fun, goal-oriented teams. At over 10 different locations over the course of my career, I built teams of crew and managers to effectively operate high volume restaurants. I learned most aspects of business management, supervision, and leadership. The diversity experienced over the years opened my world view; I learned everyone has something to contribute and everyone has value. Of course, I should list scheduling, hiring, training, inventory and cash control, food safety and sanitation, building and equipment maintenance, analyzing reports and trends for profit and loss, and strategic planning as specific skills I gained in my time at McDonald's.
