Since joining the Virology and Molecular Pathology Department, I feel that I have quickly adapted and picked up many new techniques. I have been trained on respiratory samples, which involves the extraction of DNA using the EZ1, pipetting of mastermix using the Qiagility, and PCR using the Rotorgene. I have also been trained on the testing of Gastroenteritis and CSF's.

I am always up to date with mandatory training, including all health and safety training, which enables me to work safely within the laboratory rules and adhering to all the information. I am confident in setting up and maintenance of COBAS lines in biochemistry as well as the checking of calibrations and quality control (QC) Levey-Jennings charts. I deal with any troubleshooting which needs completing. I have learnt manual duties such as osmolality, pregnancy testing and the use of blood gas analysers and ammonia testing. I am also confident in the Reception area, data entry and preparation of samples of blood, urine, faeces and other samples ready for analysis, as per the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). I undertake the stock control and putting away deliveries. I deal with phone calls from doctors within the hospital as well as from other GP surgeries, which involves giving results, and recently been the primary trainer of junior doctors with Point of Care testing. In addition, have completed External Quality Assessment (EQA) samples on the COBAS line and have learnt the validation of results; the primary task of the biomedical scientists, which ensures that results are reliable, and reports can be sent out. Any conspicuous results are flagged for further inquiries, which I enjoy investigating, especially during validation. I have kept up to date with scientific information through my CPD folder and journals from the IBMS and New Scientist. Show more Show less
