Everyday activities included receiving complaints regarding violation of child rights, issuing summons to parties that require immediate attention, working with juvenile recidivists, school dropouts and juvenile victims of abuse. I targeted 3 major localities in North Chennai where there was a rise in the count of crimes against children and crimes committed by children, rise in the school dropout levels and drug abuse. I led a team to inspect the target areas, connected with the local authorities and prepared a detailed report on these issues for the internal purposes of the Commission. Also had to assist on cases taken up by the Juvenile Justice Board through the Commission.

Everyday activities included receiving complaints, drafting and filing petitions, assisting in the hearing of summoned cases, preparing for webinars/seminars to be conducted on women and their welfare targeting audiences from across the State and help organize awareness programs for underprivileged women. On-site inspection and stings got organized if necessary.Regularly dealt with serious cases like domestic violence, dowry death, cheating, child abuse, workplace harassment, cyber crime and sexual offences and relatively less-serious issues like family/property disputes, maintenance & compensation, mental trauma and arranged for counseling sessions for the aggrieved parties. The highlight of the Internship was guiding a Triple Talaq victim in an abusive bigamous marriage who was fighting for her rights and the custody of her child.Had to stay in contact with advocates, medical experts, child welfare societies, NGOs for women and children and regularly update the State Police Department, the State Government and the National Commission for Women in New Delhi on the happenings and contribute to policy making if required.

Summer Intern

Internship at the Legal Wing of the SHRC. Daily activities included receiving complaints, translating the documents from the regional language to English, categorization of complaints and filing of petitions digitally. Interns have the opportunity to observe judicial proceedings. The orders have to be analysed in order to record the nature of the complaint and the judicial remedy. The Commission functions primarily on its Advisory Powers. This was a great opportunity to observe the various kinds of bureaucratic challenges, understand the plights of the public and witness how the State and the Public strike a cordial relationship for effective coexistence.
