    • Commercial Law Virtual Internship
      • Jul 2020 - Jul 2020

This 3 day experience enabled me to discover more about the skills needed to succeed as a lawyer. Interesting talks from representatives of major law firms cemented my passion for a legal career. The individual work project, focused on a fictional M&A deal, involved proof reading an NDA, completing due diligence, considering the pros and cons to litigation and arbitration respectively and providing a brief for the client.

During this 3 day experience I was given an insight into the daily schedule of an investment banker. Insightful sessions from current investment bankers gave me an idea of the different types of deals in investment banking and the processes involved in each type of deal. The partner firms for the event were: Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Morgan Stanley, Schroders, JP Morgan, UBS and Macquarie. The individual work project required a consideration of the life cycle of a deal in an M&A process.

I sat in the Banking team for 3 days. I drafted cover letters for a range of documents from different European jurisdictions and familiarised myself with different legal documents. I found researching ESG particularly interesting. During the research I gained a better understanding of the desirability for companies to consider ESG carefully due to banks lending more favourably to clients with good ESG ratings. One thing that stood out to me was the fact that a company's management of ESG is a key indicator of its ability to deliver long term sustainable growth and good investor relations. Show less

Each week I worked mainly with children between the ages of 4 and 8 to help them develop their swimming skills. I learnt how to motivate younger children to challenge themselves to achieve new goals whilst also improving the effectiveness of my communication and developing a greater ability to remain calm under pressure. Other skills developed include: perseverance, empathy, resilience and determination. Working alongside other colleagues meant teamwork was required and I also developed excellent working relationships. Show less

    • Insight Week
      • Aug 2018 - Aug 2018

I sat in the Restructuring team for a week learning more about this aspect of law. I worked on some interesting current issues. I conducted some research into the automotive industry. I also helped with a deal signing in the Banking team, collating signatures from all the banks into a single PDF document. I also spent some time looking into contract formation which was beneficial as I had limited exposure to the law before this work experience. During the course of the week I found presentations by current trainees and the graduate recruitment team a really helpful way to learn more about the culture and working life at A&O. There were many opportunities to interact with a wide range of different people and this helped me to develop my communication skills and confidence. Show less
