Tina Chou
Amber is an incredibly talented and versatile individual. As an electrical engineer at Sandia, she led a team of four new-hires to deliver hardware for a technical R&D project. She also supported a multi-disciplinary team with data analysis and developed FPGA code for a physical security system. Amber is a dependable colleague, excellent communicator, and well-rounded person. In addition to her technical contributions, she taught yoga to peers at our lab, promoted diversity and inclusion, and volunteered on trail maintenance crews in the Bay Area. Amber is an admirable leader who I would always want on my team!

Leading the Firmware Working Group, which manages several ongoing infrastructure projects. My role is to coordinate efforts, manage subgroups, and provide a space where knowledge can be shared. Major accomplishments include: - Deploying SOE-wide Doxygen repository for generating standardized docs - Creating a confluence space for finding code reviewers - Coordinating talks with other departments (mostly Business Development) to create cross-functional discussion around how firmware can help with project scope estimation - Creating templates for company-wide procedures, such as merge review and feature tickets - Working with the Hiring department to recruit firmware candidates Firmware Team Lead for a Large Aerospace Contract I coordinate and am the main firmware architect for a team of on-site and remote firmware engineers working towards building a large safety-critical project. I collaborate with the electrical hardware team, system engineers, and mechanical engineers at SOE to build this system for our client.

Founded the All-Firmware Group within the company, chartered to create infrastructure and standardization across firmware projects. Founded the DEI working group, the first employee resource group at SOE. Firmware lead for a safety-critical aerospace contract, created infrastructure for DO-178 compliant development. Implemented PTP on a TMS570 in C over LWIP and in C++ running FreeRTOS

Digital hardware supporting the development of the Astrum chip, including FPGA emulation and applications engineering support to showcase potential uses in distributed machine learning environments. My major contribution was as programmatic and technical lead for our winter 2020 customer demonstration with the Air Force. In this role I contributed technically by: - Writing SystemVerilog and C++ shells in the Vitis environment targeting the Xilinx Alveo200 FPGA platform - Working with our lead hardware engineer to integrate early versions of the Astrum Chip Fabric (Chisel/Scala, generating Verilog models) into the Alveo FPGA hardware test framework - Writing code in C++ to drive webcams, LED strips, and other hardware on our distributed test platform running Ubuntu 20.04 - Developing a simple C++/OpenCV computer vision application that could be run in real time on our distributed test platform with data flowing through the emulated Astrum hardware - Building a real-time testing platform out of an automatic lazy suzan (rotating platform), colored blocks, and lasers (to blind the webcams) that could be used to demonstrate our computer vision application - Working with front-end engineers to design a GUI interface that would show how the distributed test demonstration works, that would appeal to the end-customer's satellite applications

In my role as electrical engineer I worked on a wide range of technical projects focused on ameliorating specific security risks for Department of Energy stockpile systems. My work included: • Designing firmware using SystemVerilog to manage interfaces that leveraged UART and mil-std protocols • Using Matlab and Python to characterize data collected on NI hardware • Debugging hardware using common benchtop tools (O-scope, logic analyzers, etc.) • Communicating with systems teams to formalize requirements, including working closely to input design definition in a new flow-based requirements control system In addition I championed mentorship and standardization of procedures by • Creating a wiki for common toolchain installation procedures and software best-practices including version control and HDL style guides • Organizing a series of lunches for new-hires to meet with other members of the team while waiting for their clearance • Designing intern projects based on the students' interests and career goals

Built a user interface (touchscreen LCD, buttons, UART connection and onboard image memory storage), controlled by a Xilinx FPGA. I designed the schematic & layout of the PCB in Altium, wrote Verilog to control the LCD and interface to other chips on the board, populated and tested the boards using a digital oscilloscope, and used SPICE to model various circuits. Researched low-cost microcontrollers and created a prototype for an EtherCAT-enabled industrial sensor network. • Worked with an evaluation board to test parameters such as data throughput, • Developed a data connection between the microcontroller and existing National Instruments ASICs, • Created a schematic and PCB layout for a prototype board using Mentor Graphics software, and • Presented findings to senior engineers and management. I worked with the electronic and mechanical teams developing a Tire Pressure Monitoring System for airplanes. My tasks included creating simulations in Matlab, designing and populating printed circuit boards, tuning LC systems to 'speak' to one another within metal housing, and using SigmaPlot to create meaningful data. Additionally, I initiated research into wireless sensor networks and built a small network using the Zigbee (IEEE 802.15.4) standard.
