  I assisted with a grant-based research study on the histology of the diseases affecting sea coral. My duties included cataloging, photographing and prepping specimens received from divers (de-calcifying the coral skeleton in preparation for slicing and mounting on slides), using a microtome to precisely slice the specimens and mount them on a microscope slide, staining the slides and then observing and taking notes on the histology seen on the slides. The lab (Oxford Cooperative Laboratory) is a co-op with the DNR, so I also had the opportunity to assist with field studies and research on marine life and mammals (crab and fish studies in the Chesapeake Bay, dolphins, sea turtles, whales).
