Art & picture editor, and marketing designer
-
Jul 2009 - Mar 2021
I'm an Art editor with over 25 years' experience of B2B magazine publishing. My creativity skills range from designing covers, laying out pages, drawing graphs and making templates, to sourcing, commissioning, editing and manipulating photographs. Taking in corrections, as well as marketing and event design. Art editor: laying out a variety of weekly and monthly B2B magazine pages, ranging from: breaking news articles, complex feature spreads and front covers. Drawing graphs & logos, typography, image manipulation and taking in sub-editors' corrections were all a significant part of my editorial work. As well as pre-press production, transmitting pages to printers and signing-off returned PDF proofs. Post production XML tagging and making a large-print edition. Picture editor: searching for pictures from libraries, tracking down photographs from other sources, commissioning photographers to take images on location for news and features stories, liaising with contacts in industry to gain access and permissions, and negotiating fees. Editing photo shoots in Adobe Bridge, manipulating images in Photoshop, caption writing and picture archiving.Clients:PROSPECT UNION – Profile, Education Eye, Report and industry magazines; BRANDS AT WORK – Novartis; MARK ALLEN MAGAZINES – British Journal of Healthcare Assistants; BRIGHTON FRINGE – Julie Jepson; WILL TODD – Reverb, and CJ MEDIA – NHS.

Picture and production editor (maternity cover)
-
Jan 2008 - Jun 2009
Researching photographic content for Prospect's members' magazine 'Profile' with a circulation of over 100,000, I sourced material from picture libraries, secured content from other publishers and free industry sources like The Forestry Commission. I also briefed photographers to take news and feature photographss to cover strikes, marches and other news, interviews and trade union-related activities. The union is broad and the industries covered were as diverse as the MoD, government agencies, BT, Nuclear and energy to teaching and engineering. I was able to build on my contacts from Emap and grow an extensive book of, both regional, and London-based photographers. On receipt of the commissioned pictures, I created selections of photographs in Bridge for the art editor, as well as airbrushing and editing photographs in Photoshop, then finally burning CDS, writing captions and keywords to archive the pictures in Portfolio. I was also responsibly for the production tasks of liaising with Pack Post and Royal Mail about inserts, wrapping and postage.

Assistant picture editor – part-time
-
Sep 2017 - Jan 2018
Working remotely for Red Bull Media House in Austria, I edited and reviewed the commissioned content that came into the picture desk, in Adobe Bridge. Uploading Red Bull extreme sport photographs and video content to Reuters and Associated Press agency websites, ranging from cliff diving to F1. In addition, proofreading stories and researching material for writing captions and short pieces where there was no accompanying text. Some pieces I uploaded were picked up by the mainstream media and went 'viral' like the BASE jump by Red Bull Wingsuit flyers, who jumped back into a flying aircraft and the starling murmurations in Scandinavia.
