I first met Ms. Amanda Barkhauer while working at the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities as a Service and Support Administrator (SSA), when she was assigned as my official SSA Mentor. It was an honor to have her assigned as my mentor, because she was consistently the recipient of "SSA of the Month" awards for her superior performance, both in administrative work and while working face-to-face with the people on her caseload. By that time, Amanda already was an experienced social services professional, and she taught me a great deal not only about the role and the responsibilities of the job, but also about how to treat all people with dignity and respect, and how to be a strong advocate for people who are not able to advocate for themselves. Amanda was later awarded the Excellence in Self-Determination Award through the Ohio Self-Determination Association, for which I was pleased to nominate her, in 2017. It was also my great honor to later work with Amanda in a voluntary capacity on the Board of Directors of The Packard Institute nonprofit in Akron, Ohio. She was instrumental in helping to write grant applications, which were successful in receiving essential funding for the organization. She also helped to fundraise and obtain necessary supplies during the early days of the pandemic when clients in early recovery living in PI's residential facility were "locked down" and in dire need. I look back on those days with great admiration for how Amanda stepped up and simply "found a way." I will forever be proud to have worked with her throughout these times. If you ever have the opportunity to work with Ms. Amanda Barkhauer, I hope you will leap at the chance. She is a very intelligent, competent, resourceful professional. And, she is a kind, generous, compassionate human being. She will be a worthwhile addition to your team, and you will be lucky to have the opportunity to learn from her.
