Community Outreach Lead
-
Mar 2011 - Aug 2012
Explored opportunities for the CMU Rowing Club to have a positive impact on the community. Identified and established partnerships with organizations like Gwen's Girls and created programs that leveraged the student-athletes tutoring and mentoring experiences. Designed and led a digital photography program in the Gwen's Girls summer camp to help the girls explore and represent ideas about how to improve their communities. Girls completed various activities about their own neighborhoods and then took photos at a nearby park, neighborhood and animal shelter to illustrate these concepts. For the final project the girls worked in groups to create themed posters using the photos they had taken. The posters were displays as part of a local piece rally. Designed, proposed and led homework and STEM-based group activities with Gwen's Girls through Google Community Grant funding. Show less

Sep 2011 - Mar 2012
Proposed and received a Google Community Grant to have the Carnegie Mellon University Rowing Club support STEM-related after school activities with Gwen's Girls, a Pittsburgh-based non profit that provides various services to girls from disadvantaged neighborhoods. The program had CMU rowers work with the Gwen's Girls after school participants to 1) provide homework help and 2) facilitate hands-on STEM activities that were led by Assemble, a community arts and technology spaces. Girls worked with the CMU rowers to design websites, build models of their dream homes and learn to code using Scratch. Both Google and Gwen's Girls were extremely happy with program. Show less
