Having to complete my student internship programme at Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive was an eye-opening experience as being in an Early Intervention setting was something new for me. My time at Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive has allowed me to learn more about the various childhood disorders that are present at birth (e.g., Down Syndrome, Aicardi Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, etc) or diagnosed during children's early stages of life (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, etc). With this knowledge, it has allowed me to gain practical skills and understand my role as an early intervention educator, which is to scaffold the learning of children with developmental needs. This includes accommodating every child’s needs by tailoring the physical learning environment, teaching procedures, and learning resources. When children are given the appropriate intervention strategies, they will then be able to achieve their personalised development goals (i.e., Individualised Education Plan Goals). As an intern student, I was attached to 4 classes daily and my work responsibilities are as follows:- Setting up of the physical classroom environment- Preparing lesson materials- Facilitate daily care routines (e.g., toileting, snack, etc)- Assist children in their group activities or individual work time- Sitting in for team meetings with the therapists and respective class teachersAdditionally, the internship programme has also required me to:- Write 3 SMART IEP goals for a target child- Identify the target child's present level of performance and evaluate his/her progress using a range of data collection methods- Create 3 self-made teaching aids to allow children to learn skills/concepts relating to their IEP goals- Implement 4 activities - Plan a field trip- Design a take-home activity Show less
