Bio

I had hired Alok in my team for his second stint at i2. Alok was given a clear mandate to build the product knowledge in the team and train younger members of the team in the kind of thinking that is required to maintain and evolve a large and complicated code base. He did better than anyone had expected. Due to his prior experience in the product, right from day one, he was given tougher problems to solve and we saw that he developed technically brilliant solutions. Soon, he assumed the role of a development manager and a mentor of the team and he pushed everyone to always think out of box to come up with computationally and functionally efficient solutions. His contributions were key in our efforts to develop a service based architecture to support high-availability and this achieved significant improvement in scalability. He was also very organized and did start a number of efforts in the team to balance the work in the team and build the leadership in the team. One of the best qualities of Alok is that he gets everyone in the team to contribute and helps them grow, and that keeps the team together which is very important for building a good product.

I worked with Alok in the Demand Fulfilment group at i2. o) As an individual contributor, he developed in two months a significant piece of code in C++ that exports the in-memory structures of the C++ engine directly into database tables, using direct-path APIs of OCI and CLI. This replaced an older architecture , provided a 10x performance gain, and customers had an attractive upgrade feature. o) As a manager and architect, he was responsible for a significant re-architecture of the Demand Fulfilment solution, developed the next-generation APIs using web-services (gSOAP), removed heavy and costly third-party dependencies (such as TIBCO and WebMethods), and improved the performance by orders of magnitude. o) He was also responsible for detailed code reviews, architecture, design, and mentoring of developers. As a manager he encouraged equal participation from his team members, encouraged them to make bold decisions, and was hands-on in helping them be effective in their work. His pleasant and fun-loving nature make him a great colleague to work with.
