I studied phytoplankton dynamics in Galveston Bay, Texas as a result of freshwater inflows. My focus was on the community composition and primary productivity of the phytoplankton communities of Galveston Bay as influenced by varying salinities. Aspects of the project included examining resource limitation bioassays, and nutrient cycling in the benthos.

I taught Introductory Oceanography Lab to undergraduates. The course involved experiments illustrating the interdisciplinary nature of oceanography: geological, physical, chemical and biological. My duties involved setting up the lab, lecturing, grading, and creating quizzes and syllabi.

I assisted in phytoplankton ecology experiments, in addition to general lab management (i.e. glassware washing, document filing, phytoplankton culture maintenance, etc). I also conducted a student-led/faculty-assisted experiment for research credit examining the effects of temperature change on neurotoxin producing Karenia brevis, simulating movement into shallower coastal areas.

I taught the lab portion of the writing intensive course Coastal Plant Ecology to undergraduates. The course introduces the major flora of coastal wetlands and salt marshes. Students were tasked with identification, comparing methods in scientific research on coastal wetland plants, and an experiment comparing nutrient enrichment in salt marshes impacted by effluent discharge and a more pristine marsh. Duties included lecturing, field trip management, and grading. I taught the lab… Show more I taught the lab portion of the writing intensive course Coastal Plant Ecology to undergraduates. Duties included lecturing, field trip management, and grading. I taught the lab portion of the writing intensive course Marine Botany to undergraduates. The course introduces the major groups of phytoplankton and macroalgae (seagrasses and marsh plants). Students were tasked with identification and a series of experiments, including Light/Dark Bottle, Resource Limitation Assays, and Fixed Interval Transect Sampling. Duties included lecturing, grading, lab set up and break down. I have also taught the lab portion of Introductory Biology to undergraduates. The course introduces basic concepts of biology, including: cellular respiration, Mendelian genetics, gel electrophoresis, DNA replication, microscopy, mitosis/meiosis, enzymes, macromolecules (synthesis and breakdown), pH, and basic taxonomy. Students were tasked with various experiments to drive home concepts and scientific report writing. Duties involved lecturing, overseeing experiments, creation of syllabi, quizzes, and exams, and grading. Show less
