I spent six weeks in Papua New Guinea (PNG) facilitating a health and community development program in three different villages. Also during this time in PNG, I volunteered abroad our medical ship, the MV YWAM PNG, in the optometry clinic during a healthcare outreach in Milne Bay. Before going to PNG, I completed an intensive training program focused on personal, spiritual and character development. I worked as a counselor for high school students at an overnight camp in Michigan. By working with high school students as they stayed at camp for two-week periods, I had the opportunity to mentor them, spur them to think critically towards religion, and nurture their spiritual development. Managing group conflict and being able to think in your feet were essential skills for this highly dynamic job. Additionally, maintaining a positive attitude and spreading that throughout the team of staff and campers was essential for ensuring a positive experience for the campers. Show less

Worked in the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) on an evaluation of the Department of Health's follow-up for English victims of the terrorist attacks in Sousse, Paris and Brussels. The results of our work will allow Public Health England to more efficiently and effectively provide mental health support to victims of terrorist attacks. In addition to supervising water activities as a lifeguard, I served as a leader for high school students at the camp. In both capacities I ensured group safety, a harmonious group dynamic and generally worked to maintain a positive morale among campers. Handling problems in a quick, positive manner was essential as instances like changes in weather could totally disrupt the daily schedule.
