Responsible for the extraction and analysis of organic contaminants from water and sediment samples. Specific projects/analyses include: -Semi-volatile organic contaminants: extraction using Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) and flash column chromatography, followed by analysis using GC-MS -PFAS: Extraction using Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) techniques, followed by target and non-target analysis using Sciex HPLC-qTOF -Microcysitns: Extraction using SPE and analysis using HPLC-MS/MS Show less

Master’s Thesis: Tidally Resolved Observations of Carbon and Nutrient Exchange through Eastern Long Island Sound. Prepared materials for field sampling cruises and executed the collection of water samples for the analysis of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous constituents. Analyzed water and filter samples for carbon and nutrient constituents with Shimadzu Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analyzer, Elemental Analyzer (EA) and SmartChem Nutrient Analyzer. Assisted with other projects that focused on the detection of agrochemicals in the Long Island Sound estuary and in Sri Lankan well water, which utilized SPE extraction methods and GC-MS. Show less

Completed a summer research project the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science working under professors Dr. Laura Lapham and Dr. Michael Gonsior. Project title: Assessing the Fate of Organic Matter as it is Transformed Through Remineralization Processes in Surface Sediments. The project consisted of determining sedimentary zones in cores collected from the Chesapeake Bay by determining ion, methane and carbon concentrations by GC-FID, IC-MS and Shimadzu TOC-V, respectively. DOM from sediment pore water was then extracted by solid phase extraction (SPE) and the components were determined using Aqualog and PARAFAC analysis. Changes in DOM class in relation to sedimentary zones was assessed. Additionally, I had the opportunity to assist in the planning and collection of water samples from the Sargasso Sea for dissolved methane analysis and processed samples using a head space equilibrium method aboard the R/V Sharp. Synthesized nanoporous materials for landfill gas capture and separation applications. Performed aerobic and anaerobic synthesis of amine-linked polymers using schlenk-line, glove box and liquid nitrogen techniques. Examined properties of synthesized materials using surface area analyzer and IR-spectroscopy. Synthesized nanoporous materials for landfill gas capture and separation applications.
