    • Postdoctoral Research Associate
      • Jul 2018 - Present

As a postdoctoral associate at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in the lab of Dr. Ivan Baxter, I am actively involved in both computational and fieldwork aspects of large-scale plant experiments. These studies explore abiotic stresses from a quantitative genetics standpoint, linking regulation of various -omics data to genotype in the C4 grasses. This involves leadership in data sciences relating to transcriptomics, metabolomics and DNA-seq data as well as practical plant science skills such as harvesting, planting and executing experiments. In addition to overseeing my own projects, I am actively involved in mentoring of undergraduate scientists and established researchers who are interested in acquiring computational skills. My most recent student mentee is Alexander Liu, an undergraduate REU student from Cornell University. As my mentee he is learning computational skills including quality control techniques, transcript quantification and differential expression analyses to compare the transcriptome of Sorghum and Setaria under a time-course water deficit. As a third year PhD student some of my responsibilities include the following: generate custom workflows for analysis of next generation sequencing data focused around differential expression and/or novel gene discovery, develop interfaces for these pipelines, aid in interpretation of data analyses from a biological perspective. Coursework includes elective classes in probability and statistics, with a focus on developing novel mathematical approaches to RNA seq data in the near future. Active member of the Bioinformatics Student Association (BiSA), currently serving as the organization's president. Show less
