As an educator, I promote excellence in English skills, critical appreciation of story-telling and confidence to perform under examination conditions. Excellent curriculum knowledge is essential. However, as a tutor in a 1-2-1 setting, interpersonal skills, trust, emotional intelligence and lesson pace tailored to each individual student, are also critical to success. I have tutored students preparing for entrance and scholarship at selective and private schools, for GCSE, IB, A-Level, and university undergraduate admissions. Also, students preparing presentations, coursework essays and speeches for debating competitions and other public speaking. I have tutored to improve reading skills, essay writing and literacy skills and to address targets and feedback from school reports. With students, I am very clear that ours is a partnership with clear goals established at the outset that we will achieve. My goal is to enable students to have the confidence to independently apply what they learn in class and tuition in life, be that in lessons, a class test, formal examination, entrance test or whenever they choose. English skills cross over to many other areas of the curriculum. I am aware of the need to meet parents’ expectation and deliver value for money. Also, I aim to deliver tuition which enriches lives as well as passes tests and entrance examinations. I have met many students that dislike English at the start, who ‘hate' reading/poetry/ Shakespeare/ English lessons/teacher/writing essays or all of it. I love helping students to overcome their negative perceptions which can be barriers to learning and influence their opinions of the value of Literature. Show less
