My most recent employment as a Social Worker was supporting children diagnosed with cancer and their families. This was a hospital based post, working on the ward and in clinic as well as home/community visits. The role required excellent interpersonal skills, individual and multi-disciplinary team work to provide a high quality reactive service using all appropriate methods of social work intervention. The work involved assessing levels of children's needs and those who care for them and were appropriate deliver services to meet those needs, reviewing these needs as required and in line with care plans. At times this may include providing services to those children who are at risk of significant harm and in need of protection. Generally much of the work was around the impact of a serious illness on the family as a whole, supporting them with emotional, financial (DLA, welfare benefits, loss of earnings, additional costs of caring for a child with cancer) practical problems (employment, education, childcare, housing problems) and occasionally end of life and bereavement support. Additionally duties include working within timescales, keeping and maintaining accurate up to date recordings of case work, advocacy, participation in team meetings, psycho/social meetings and supervision, referral to other agencies, group work, developing resources and tools in assessment, care planning, end of life/bereavement support and treatment abroad, and having good use of computer systems and involvement in the duty social work system.
