Constar UK manufactures bottles, preforms and closures (bottle tops) mainly for the carbonated soft drinks and water markets. Billions of units are produced in a year for a range of customers including blue chip customers such as Britvic. Annual turnover 60 million. I was recruited to Constar in July 1995 with the purpose of establishing a human resources function and reorganising the contracts that were in place. I set up all the systems and procedures associated with the people management of a 24 hour manufacturing operation. In addition my role was to advise on all aspects of employment law. I was responsible for recruitment and all elements of the contracting process with employees. I assisted managers to deliver the policies and procedures I had put in place through training and support. A key element of the process was induction and training. I carried out the initial induction and managed the training of the employees through key managers. I also had responsibility for occupational health, BRC standard compliance through audit, and some elements of health and safety. I am trained to complete audiometric testing. I would oversee all disciplinary and grievance matters to ensure legal compliance and took a lead in the meetings and pay negotiations with the recognised GMB union. In my tenure the company reduced to a headcount of 101 (at the point the closure was announced) from 260. Change management, often downsizing, was a key element of my role. I have reorganised and flexed shift patterns in order to match the requirements of production. I have been involved in bringing people into the organisation under TUPE and have seen my own terms transfer within the business. I have advised colleagues on TUPE and its impact. Finally I completed, as part of the BRC team, risk assessments, internal audits and pre-BRC audits. Left due to redundancy when the company was purchased by Esterform and taken into a staged closure.
