I had three primary positions while a graduate research assistant: 1) teacher’s assistant for forestry related classes, 2) a research assistant to my major professor's ongoing projects in the lab, and 3) complete my research and thesis as a graduate student. As a teacher’s assistant I would lead three different lab times every week for a 12 week period. In each lab there was roughly 10 to 15 students. I would lead the students in outdoor classes identifying the native trees (dendrology), as well as conducting in-field quizzes and exams. As a research assistant, I assisted the professor and his technicians in ongoing research projects. This research ranged in data collection of in field plantings, collection of seed, planting of seed or bare-root seedlings. As a graduate student, I conducted forest measurements on my thesis project, that consisted of mixed artificially planted hardwood species. After two years of data collection, I was responsible for running statistical analysis. During this position I was in charge of hiring undergraduate forestry, wildlife and fisheries students to assist me in the collection of data on my research plots. I oversaw making expense reports, as they related to my study, for equipment needed and kept track of the timesheets of each person I hired. I was also in charge of scheduling for travel to take in-field measurements. Show less

I also assisted in the containerizing of multiple species, such as root stock from the local state nursery. I assisted in the planting and recorded the germination of planted black walnut and butternut seed in greenhouse settings. Assisted in making sure that the potted material was weed free. I supervised weekend trips to the local northern red oak seed orchard to collect seed for planting at the state nursery. I was in charge of finding and hiring workers to assist me in the work. My primary function was to assist in the collection of in-field data collection of sites across the southeast. These sites consisted of plantings of Northern red oak or American Chestnut, Chinese Chestnut, or the hybrid cross of the species (B3F3). These measurements included measuring height and the diameter at breast height of each individual tree. Also assessing the nearest competitive tree, the species and measuring the height of said competitive tree. I also assisted in taking inventory of the regeneration on a newly harvested sites. This inventory included identifying all woody species and invasive species. I also was in charge of inputting all the data collected into spreadsheets on an Excel platform.
