  My translational cancer research program is focused on cellular and molecular mechanisms of cancer metastasis; in particular the study of circulating tumor cells (CTCs), cancer stem cells (CSCs), and the metastatic microenvironment; and how the knowledge gained from experimental studies in these areas can be translated to the clinic to benefit patients. My educational interests and expertise include graduate education and mentorship, experiential learning, community-engaged learning, translational cancer research, and cancer cell biology. Show less

  The Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology is a basic science department within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University. Consisting of 35 core and joint faculty members, the department is committed to excellence in multidisciplinary research and scholarship that combines the fields of cell biology, neuroscience, and clinical anatomy. I am responsible for managing human and financial resources for staff, faculty and students at the senior level, as well as implementation of modern corporate governance principles and best practices. As a department Chair and a member of the senior leadership team for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University, I also provide advocacy and responsibility for the academic mission of the department, leadership in both the development and implementation of strategic planning initiatives, participation in major committees, and functions as an academic leader within the University in matters of policy and scholarship.   My responsibility in this role included oversight of all aspects of the Anatomy & Cell Biology Graduate Program including management of current graduate students (~65/year) and associated program faculty (43); recruitment of new students (~20 per year); graduate course curriculum review and revision; comprehensive and thesis exams; teaching assistantship assignments; scholarship reviews; and budget management aimed at maximizing university and faculty funding dollars in order to deliver the best graduate experience possible to students.   The Department of Oncology consists of >140 clinical and basic science faculty members across 5 Divisions (Experimental Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and Windsor Oncology). The Acting Chair position provided study leave coverage for the Chair including administrative oversight of all aspects of the academic mission of the Department. It also involved the initiation (in this time period) and subsequent leadership of the Department's Strategic Planning process which resulted in the development and implementation of a balanced scorecard to track metrics and outcomes related to the Strategic Plan.   The Translational Breast Cancer Unit was created in 1998 through a partnership between the London Regional Cancer Program and the Breast Cancer Society of Canada (BCSC), now Breast Cancer Canada (BCC). This has involved a commitment by the BCC to date of over $5.2M to support world-class translational breast cancer research in London, Ontario. In this role, I have responsibility for overseeing the TBCRU graduate and postdoctoral training program; budget management; donor stewardship; community outreach; and public relations. Show less
