The Extended Masters Program includes 24 weeks of full-time research. Muscle dysmorphia (MD) is characterised by the self-obsession with muscular appearance, where individuals feel that they are not muscular enough and are never satisfied with their physique. This condition is most prevalent within males, characterised by extreme psychological and behavioural characteristics that are focused on building a more muscular physique. The popularity of professional and amateur sports has increased the desires of physical appearance, recognition and fame. Sports participation does not lead to the development of MD in all cases, but it does increase the risk of developing MD. Research has shown that the prevalence of MD is higher in bodybuilders and weightlifters compared to the general population. However, minimal studies have researched the symptoms prevalent in other resistance-trained athletes, and no studies have looked at the symptom prevalence of MD within rugby union athletes. Rugby union athletes have a large amount of pressure placed on them to obtain a muscular physique. Research suggests that rugby union athletes may suffer from symptoms that have been commonly displayed in those with MD. As a result the aim of my thesis was to investigate the symptom prevalence of MD within a cohort of rugby union athletes to determine if these athletes are at a higher risk of developing MD compared to athletes who participate in sports that do not have a great focus on muscular strength for performance and the general population of those who do not play a competitive sport or participate in resistance training activities. The results from this research project have been very interesting, and are in the process of publication.

Throughout my placement, I assessed the current Mater Group menu and current patient satisfaction of the food and service that was being offered. I really enjoyed learning about the food standards, audit process, and everything that happens behind the scenes to provide the best possible food service. I worked on multiple wards including oncology, surgical, gastro, renal and antenatal as well as specialised areas including cystic fibrosis. I also had the opportunity of working in the outpatient clinic where I consulted cases including diabetes management, paediatrics, weight management, and various gastrointestinal disorders. I demonstrated clinical judgement and cognitive flexibility with the use of relevant guidelines to apply evidence-based practice. This project involved working with the cardiac rehabilitation program run at the Redlands hospital. My focus was on nutrition education, and the implimentation of a continuous 5-week nutrition education program for all participants involved in the cardiac rehabilitation sessions. Throughout the project i liaised with the current surrounding rehabilitation programs, and provided a suitable and sustainable education program for Redlands. I really enjoyed this experience and value the knowledge and skills i gained from working with the friendly staff at Redlands hospital.
