I currently work at the prestigious Chongqing Bashu IVY Academy as a middle school ESL teacher. I teach Grade 7 and 8 students in all language skills including speaking, listening, reading and writing. The role includes a variety of responsibilities and duties, most importantly being responsible for the development of around 150 students' English language abilities. I am fully in charge of lesson content and curriculum development and the school have given me a lot of freedom to do this in the manner I believe to be most suitable. Being in charge of so many students means that of course there are a variety of English levels throughout each class, and as a result I of course have to be very flexible in both my role as a teacher and as a content and curriculum developer. One of the most important aspects of my job is to ensure that I understand all of my students' abilities and limitations, knowing when it is appropriate to push and motivate them to achieving both their goals as learners and my goals as an educator. I was a Primary School teacher at DEPU Foreign Language School, a private school which leads students from Primary School all the way through to graduation from High School, ensuring that the students are given the best possible chance of securing a place at elite universities worldwide. In my time at Depu I was responsible for teaching grades 1-6 at various times, and stayed with my students until they moved on to Middle School and beyond. The students are wonderful and eager, but every class had a variety of different English abilities and levels, so I needed to ensure that the content of the classes was suitable enough that the higher-level students were stimulated and motivated, while the lower-level students were encouraged and not simply left behind. In this role I had a range of duties, with heavy focus on researching, planning and creating curriculum content for use during lessons. I was given a lot of freedom to be very creative in my approach to creating and teaching the lessons. The school mainly adheres to Cambridge International Education frameworks and standards, and I was given a lot of responsibility to plan and create curriculum content for the Cambridge Global Perspectives classes, which focused on task-based learning for young students. It was both challenging and very rewarding. Show less

While hunting for a full-time classroom teaching position, I work part-time online teaching students from all over China through the Likeshuo teaching platform. The students range in age from 4 to 18 years old, though the majority of my regular and repeat students are aged 8 to 13 years old. I really enjoy this as a way to continue building on my established classroom experience, though there are some key differences between the two teaching environments. I need to use TPR technique very often to ensure that the student's attention is kept focused at all times, and the ability to adapt is also highly prized as you never know exactly what type of student you may be teaching on any given day. Often the students are shy and I need to use my openness and social skills to enable them to practice their language skills confidently, and importantly, to earn their trust. Show less

I taught in various public schools and locations around the Hanoi area in Vietnam, as a cover teacher. I was often given very basic instructions about the intended lesson content and I would then develop a lesson plan based on that information in advance. Things did not always go as originally planned with these classes and class sizes varied anywhere between 20 – 50 students, so I often had to adapt to different situations and think on my feet which was challenging but very rewarding. I gained valuable classroom management skills and learned a lot about keeping the attention of large classes in this role. Show less

In this role, I taught English to university students and businesspeople. These classes varied in content and focus and would range from introducing basic conversational skills to complete beginners, to helping more advanced students understand grammar and context to improve an already high level of English. I really enjoyed teaching these classes as there was such a variety of different levels and this could be true even within the same class. Working here helped me improve my multi-tasking skills during class and being aware of each student’s individual progress and needs. I found that this job was really suited to my personality as I was able to form good trusting relations with the students, which always vastly improves the learning environment. Show less

I worked in South Korea as an ESL teacher for over 10 months now and I really loved this job. My daily responsibilities include teaching English to students from Elementary to Middle-School level. This was usually from a set curriculum and textbooks, however I often had to adapt class lessons and plans through our own organisational skills to fit each student and class as required. Since starting here, I found that I am very good at working with children and I understand that every student has different requirements that have to be met. I am dynamic in my approach to teaching which helps me to build a good relationship with each student while maintaining respect and authority. Show less

I have worked as a volunteer for YFS generating articles and match reports within the youth football game. This involves independent organisation and communication between myself and the clubs or schools involved, travelling to various youth level matches and writing up extensive match reports. This position has granted me a tremendous platform to practice and develop my writing skills and earn experience of writing accurately to a deadline. I was afforded the opportunity to gain work experience for Dog Digital. My principal responsibilities were to generate digital content for the NHS Lothian and Borders Facebook and Twitter streams. This included coming up with ideas, links and writing up the associated blurbs to be posted along with the links. By the end of my time with Dog, I had generated and planned out two months of daily posts for both Facebook and Twitter and organised the content plan into an Excel spreadsheet. This was a wonderful opportunity and gave me a fantastic insight into working in a digital marketing role. Show less

During the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games I worked as a reporter for the official games news service, which was provided by Infostrada Sports. As part of the team covering the boxing events at the games I had a very fast-paced and high-pressure role. My task was to interview boxers as they came through the media area, and required me to be very approachable and to engage personally with the athletes in order to get the best possible quotes to be distributed to the press. Organisation and teamwork was key, and it took a lot of coordination and collaboration in order to make sure that every boxer was covered. Show less
