Research title:Reliability-based assessment on the performance of external dampers in controlling bridge stay cable vibrations.Outcomes: • Proposed a reliability-based design and/or maintenance tool to evaluate performance of bridge stay cables under different wind excitation mechanisms (Dry inclined cable galloping, Rain-wind induced cable vibration)• Determined optimized strategy for maintenance of a cable network system over bridge service life within expected operational period (by including lifetime variations of structural parameters (cable tension and damper capacity), and wind speed and direction parameters). • Improved current engineering practice on performance-based design of mechanical viscous dampers used in cable-stayed bridge structures (to ensure effective long-term maintenance planning of bridge stay cables) • Executed in wind tunnel setup and turbine configuration (Finished assembly of wind tunnel parts; configuration and calibration of wind tunnel parts, generator, turbine, electrical parts, and programming) The research was funded by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
