Here, I learned to apply my skills acquired from fashion internships to a completely different industry: Tax. I researched high net worth individuals in London with a view to invite them to a promotional event hosted by us. I was responsible for sending out personalised emails and making telephone calls. On the day of the event I was again welcoming guests and further promoting our services during informal networking that followed. Having had no prior experience of tax, the experience proved to me that I am a fast learner and can flexibly adapt my interpersonal and communication skills to a variety of contexts.

Press Intern
-
Jun 2014 - Oct 2014
Here, I assisted the Head of Press with tasks such as sample trafficking; researching Russian media; compiling shopping guides; welcoming high-profile guests and even dry cleaning for celebrities. Being part of a small team, I could help with e-commerce; in-store merchandising and conducting important business calls with Russian clients. I was asked to manage the press office for two weeks, which all took place alongside my studies. I really appreciated the value of organisation, problem-solving and clear communication to ensure valuable samples were not lost halfway across the globe and they reached the stylists in time.

Sep 2013 - Dec 2013
In this position I organised weekly meetings with a group of ten first year students to help them settle into UCL. My main job was to give advice, share my own experiences and liaise with staff in the department should they need. To make it worth their while, I would usually arrange a meeting in popular student spots such as the local pizza place. I thoroughly enjoyed the role because I remembered how I felt when I was in their position, so it taught me how to be a role model and keep a group motivated.

By this point it may seem like quite a jump from my prior aspirations, but it really opened my eyes to the breadth of career opportunities available for me. This was my first taste of fashion PR. I was one of several interns at an agency and was delighted by the variety of tasks; there was no typical work routine. On some days I was calling Parisian offices and conversing in French; on others I made press clippings, and there were even times when I spent the afternoon spraying Penhaligon’s perfume on some very exclusive fashion show invitations! Being a young woman, the shows were exciting and beautiful to watch. However, what inspired me the most was witnessing the entire logistical and creative expertise that took place behind the scenes. Until that point, I had a rather naive outlook on fashion from its very well polished exterior, what appears effortlessly flawless to the consumer is actually the culmination of a huge team effort and intense attention to detail.

At this point I started reevaluating my childhood aspirations and really had to start thinking about what I wanted to study in university. One of the professors at Oxford University kindly agreed to take me on in his lab. My days were spent extracting enzymes from rat livers; splitting cell lines and titrating various solutions. At the end of each week, they asked me to present my findings, which taught me how to organise my ideas and analyse complex data from an early age. This was actually my favourite part of the experience because my own insights contributed to future research decisions.

Growing up, I dreamt of becoming a doctor. I was very lucky, and indeed excited, to be selected for a work experience placement at the local hospital. From mental health to heart disease, I really appreciated the breadth of departments they introduced us to and it was fascinating to sit in on patient consultations and even lead group discussions.
