  Working with a Masters student studying the habitat preferences of wood mice I assisted in the setting of Sherman traps, mark and recapture, as well as vegetation surveys and data recording. I carried this out over three days every month, with all data I collected used in the final masters thesis.

  Working on evolutionary genetics within the Life Sciences department I spent 5 weeks collecting data on snail shell banding patterns to be combined with genetic profiles which were to be used in a PhD students research paper. Following my data collection I analysed my findings using the statistical software R and wrote up a detailed report. I was also responsible for upkeep of the laboratory, preparation of specimens, and feeding of the departments extensive snail collection.

  The Nottingham Advantage Award allows student to take a further three modules outside of their curriculum in order to develop skills that will benefit their future career goals. Through this I undertook a year long curation module where I learned how to prepare and display biological specimens for educational purposes, and how to engage the general public in life sciences through the use of presentations, workshops, and classes. In my other modules I improved on my skills as an public speaker, as well as reflecting on my skills and experience in order to more effectively apply what I've learned to future employment.

  On this 4 week placement I assisted in daily surveying including point count surveys, mist netting, nest box surveys, and chick ringing. Through this I greatly improved my identification skills of both birds and plants, while working in a diverse group of mixed ages and abilities. I also carried out public presentations on the work of the foundation and the wildlife of Hungary, in addition to assisting in the rehabilitation of several owls and working with the local residents to protect important nesting sites.



Nottingham Bird Ringers

  I attended weekly bird ringing sessions with Nottingham Bird Ringers during the last 6 months of my degree, which I have arranged to continue with my local group in Somerset with an aim to get my C permit. During my time in Nottingham I learned how to process a variety of species, improving on my abilities to identify, sex, and age birds. I am confident handing birds, setting up mist nets, and have improved on my net extraction skills. I also have a better understanding of the population dynamics of many common species as well as how our data can be used for conservation purposes.

  As a committee member I helped to run weekly practical conservation sessions with the campus grounds ranger, organised three day trips to the Peak District to work with Peak Park Conservation Volunteers, and represented the committee at the meetings of local wildlife organisations and charities. I was also responsible for the weekly email, in addition to our publicity through social media, and putting on events for our members such as nature walks at local reserves, conservation themed documentary screenings, and wildlife surveying workshops.
