Nottingham Consultancy Challenge - Group Lead
-
Jul 2020 - Aug 2020
In the wake of Covid-19, many of the summer internships I had hoped to apply for, were cancelled. This Virtual 'Consultancy Challenge' offered to opportunity to learn new skills and work with new people I had not met before. I was placed in a group with three other undergraduates from the University of Nottingham, all completing different degrees. In our first meeting, I volunteered to be Group Leader. This put me in charge of assigning work and setting deadlines while also taking responsibility for the standardisation of our report, e.g. recommending the layout of the report, and adapting work completed by other team members. We worked with Felcana, a firm specialising in ‘fit bits’ for dogs and cats, seeking to find ways for them to enter the Asian market. We focused on five countries that Felcana had specified, created a range of criteria (e.g. smartphone/wearable activity monitor ownership) that could be applied to each, and then ranked those countries in terms of ease of market entry. I researched two of the five countries we looked at and wrote up the findings for an additional country. Once the bulk of the writing had been completed, I also wrote the final evaluation and conclusion, making explicit the reasoning behind our final recommendations. The six weeks on this challenge have been invaluable in gaining ‘work like’ experience. People work at different speeds and in different ways, so it is important to take a step back and analyse the best way to proceed on a project. As leader, you also must be able to delegate tasks and get people on side, motivation is key for delivering a quality service. Individually, this work has also revealed how important it is to get to grips with the subject area early on. This project meant researching quite a niche subject area, and in retrospect I would’ve spent longer getting to understand Felcana’s products, however, after an informative chat with our supervisor, I was much better prepared to add value to the project.
