Shepherds The Vets is a large independent primary care hospital with three smaller branches in South Wales. The hospital offers a 24/7 emergency service. I was fortunate to carry out 10 weeks EMS at Shepherds as a veterinary student, and it was clear that the huge team of around 15 vets, 20 nurses and support staff would be a great learning environment. My responsibilities include a mixture of consulting, surgery, imaging, hospital in-patients and out-of-hours shifts, ensuring I am practiced in all the main fields of primary care. My Professional Development Phase is completed due to the high caseload and the supportive learning environment at the practice. I am currently completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Surgery with Improve International, using surgical cases I am responsible for at Shepherds the Vets. www.shepherdsthevets.co.uk Show less

My position as President of Vet Mentor is a great honour and I look forward to working with the veterinary surgeons and veterinary students in our organisation, to leave a lasting positive legacy on the UK veterinary profession. Vets make vets. We can all pass on our experiences and insights to the next generation. We all have the ability to leave the veterinary profession in a better way than when we found it. We can all give back. My aim as President of Vet Mentor is to bring together passionate mentors from across the UK and nurture a diverse, resilient and game-changing next generation of vets. PetSaver’s is a veterinary charity run by the British Small Animal Veterinary Association that funds research to improve the health and welfare of small animals. I will be exploring feline lymphoma over the summer to help provide a better evidence base for decision making in small animal practice. I like to thank PetSaver’s for providing me with a Student Research Grant and thank you to Professor Elsa Beltran for supervising. Medic Mentor kindly awarded me a scholarship to author a complete tool kit to prepare prospective students for the interview stage of the Veterinary Medicine application. The book was published in August 2019 and was well-received by prospective students and highly commended by the team at Medic Mentor. I am proud that my own experiences in interviews have been reflected in a useful tool for students.I have also had the opportunity to present my ‘life as a vet student’ to Medic Mentor students and have performed mock interviews. I look forward to working more with Medic Mentor in the future. Show less

An 8 week scholarship awarded by the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare to carry out a research project at the Royal Veterinary College, Hawkshead, Hertfordshire. The project titled 'The Great Big Hairy Border Collie Study 2017' explored the role of chronic stress in Border collies affected by idiopathic epilepsy. Hair cortisol levels were used as a biomarker for chronic stress. The study was the largest canine hair cortisol done to date and the first to investigate the cumulative effect of seizures over time, the characteristic feature of epilepsy. The findings were submitted to UFAW and presented at the Animal Welfare Student Scholar meeting at the University of Reading in December 2017. Show less
