Alexandre Woelfle is an engineer with the National Research Council Canada’s Automotive and Surface Transportation portfolio, and part of the Wheel/Rail Interaction & Performance group within its Rail Transportation program. He obtained his B. Eng. degree in 2005 from the University of Ottawa. He joined NRC shortly thereafter in the Rail Transportation’s Testing and Instrumentation group and he moved to the Wheel/Rail Interaction & Performance group in 2009. Among the projects in which he has been involved at NRC-AST, he has analyzed data from structural tests of coal and grain covered hopper cars, played a lead role in a study of the comparative performance of standard and improved metallurgy wheel steels on coal cars, designed wheel and rail profiles for many transit, commuter and freight systems across the globe, including St. Louis, Toronto, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia, and has recently examined the compatibility of wheel and rail profiles with respect to turnout design for a transit system in India.
