The Swiss army presently has 6 active and 2 reserve mechanized battalions. With the present structure, each one is organised in a headquarters company, a logistics company, two tank and two mechanized infantry companies ; a self-propelled mortar company existed until 2010. The battalion numbers 951 men, serving 3 weeks in the form of a refresher courses, plus 2-3 extra weeks for the cadre. The 17th Tank Battalion was originally formed in 1957 - then numbered 11. It was the first to receive the British-made "Centurion" Mk. 5 (Pz 57). Since then, it has served on the Swiss-designed model 68/75 AA4 and now the model 87 "Leopard 2 WE" main battle tank. Supporting it, the mechanized infantry (Panzergrenadiere) companies have served on several versions of the ubiquitous M-113 (SPz 63/73/89) and now the Swedish-designed CV-90 (SPz 2000). Show less
