My main project consists of assisting in the launch and management of the Community Action Model Project. In this project, I oversee three community based organizations (CBOs) and their Emerging Community Leaders based on the CAM model of San Francisco's Tobacco Free Project. This is a 2-year project in which these CBOs recruit individuals from the communities in which they are working to change, so that the leaders of change in these communities are creating solutions that target the health and social inequities these communities face. I am also deployed as a contact tracer/case investigator for the county to assist with the COVID-19 pandemic. Show less

I was placed at the Alameda County Dept. of Public Health, tobacco control program. The tobacco control team is involved in helping community projects, government agencies, health agencies, law enforcement , and businesses reduce accessibility of tobacco products and help counter the influences of tobacco, while understanding the role of health inequities in its influence. My projects included Tobacco Retail Licensing in Livermore and Fremont, assisting in the launch of the Community Action Model Project, community outreach, and improving the community grants process to provide funding to eligible community based organizations. I assisted an Otolaryngologist in providing direct patient care by assisting in procedures such as biopsies, turbinate reductions, sinuplasties, polypectomies, and nasal endoscopies. I triaged the patients and noted their HPI, took vitals, administered nasal spray prior to endoscopies, and prepared injections for procedures. I explained procedures, expected outcomes, and after-care to patients. I explained test results to patients and addressed their questions.I was responsible for communication and duties related to all of the patients for an Otolaryngologist. I prepared patient charts and documented clinical notes. Other responsibilities included responding to patient emails, working with insurance companies to obtain authorization for medications, scheduling patient appointments in our clinic and for outside tests, efficiently rooming patients, cleaning patient rooms and equipment, calling in prescriptions, and manage the physician's schedule. I taught weekly workshops on accessing resources at local under-resourced high schools. I would learn curriculums on mental health, substance abuse, and sexual health. I attended weekly meetings to discuss these topics and learn about how to implement different approaches to improve our teaching methods. This consisted of incorporating a trauma-informed approach, understanding the power dynamics that cause stress in the classroom, and how to accommodate and include students from all types of backgrounds. Our goal is to give students the tools they need to make well-informed health decisions. I participated in weekly discussions sessions in conjunction with my FSI shadowing, to discuss topics such as medical ethics, health care insurance models, mental health, medical advancements, medical malpractice, alternative medicine, health disparities, sexual health, and drug/alcohol addiction. These discussions provided a space for myself and other interns to work through these important components of health. We would address the solutions we would like to help bring to healthcare. • Undergraduate Researcher
      • Jan 2014 - May 2015

I conduct research with a graduate student on the phytoremediation of an arsenic contaminated site in Berkeley. I have worked in the Pallud lab for over two semesters while at Berkeley. I have spent time in both the laboratory and in the field site, although my primary is laboratory research. I come into lab every week willing to learn, and actually excited for the work we have ahead. I have been with the project long enough to begin seeing the impact of my work. While in the lab I have been exposed to not only the broad procedures and policies involved with formal laboratory research, but also very specific techniques such as soil sampling, C/N ratio analysis, soil texture measurements. In terms of field work, I contribute to the collective effort of harvesting fern fronds for laboratory analysis and gathering soil samples. I understand how important it is to be dedicated to the question you are exploring, which is why I probe deeper by asking questions that reveal the purpose of the research we are doing. I ask for more reading material, while also asking about the meaning and importance of every procedure. I strive to improve as a researcher, knowing that the work we do in the laboratory will evolve and grow into results that we can use to see how phytoremediation along with nutrients are important to soil recovery and the overall health of people. • Research Intern
      • Jun 2014 - Jul 2014

During my summer internship, I conducted and presented research on cytotrophoblast and progenitor cells within the placenta (Regenerative Medicine). I participated in laboratory research on human embryonic stem cells in the Fisher Lab and learned procedures such as cell culture, Q-PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and RNA extraction. I presented my research at the URI 2014 symposium at the end of the summer for other researchers at UCSF, medical doctors, donors to the program, and other interns. I attended lab meetings as well, which gave me a general view of the work other researchers were conducting. Show less
