Supervisors - Thor Thordarson, Godfrey Fitton. Funded by Xstrata Nickel AustralasiaMy PhD research is focussed on the Archaean volcanic island-arc succession beneath the Cosmos komatiite-hosted nickel-sulphide deposits in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. This previously unstudied mineralised succession has been investigated and interpreted via core logging, sampling and analysis of over 100 diamond drill holes, which has allowed detailed mapping and sub-surface correlation of the stratigraphy. Geochemical analysis, using a combination of XRF, ICP-MS and EMPA, alongside petrology, has been used to characterise the different volcanic units within the succession. Garnet-biotite geothermometry has established the peak metamorphic temperature for the region. U-Pb dating of several zircon-bearing lithologies has been undertaken to underpin the newly developed stratigraphic framework, allowing the Cosmos region to be compared to other adjacent nickel-sulphide bearing volcanic successions within the Agnew-Wiluna greenstone belt. Detailed geochemical analysis and dating of the succession has established a geodynamic setting and age range for the Cosmos greenstone succession that has raised interesting questions about how this domain fits into proposed regional tectonic frameworks for the Eastern Goldfields, itself a topic of much current debate. Throughout my PhD research I have also tutored and demonstrated for several undergraduate courses including Ore Mineralogy and Petrology, History of Life, Earth Dynamics and Sedimentology. I have also demonstrated on numerous undergraduate residential field trips largely focused on teaching undergraduate students geological mapping skills and rock identification in the field. Locations have included Southern Spain, the Northwest Highlands of Scotland and Iceland.

My role at the Shahumyan mine in Armenia was to teach local geologists how to undertake geological section interpretation of the sub-surface stratigraphy, which had not been carried out previously. I also gave presentations and produced posters for the geologists to help them improve their logging practices and understanding of ore formation and paragenesis, mineralogy of the volcanic rocks and alteration assemblages and volcanic processes.
