Assistant Correspondent
-
Jan 2016 - Mar 2017
On a day to day basis I produced in depth research and data for articles, identified and contacted potential interviewees and used English, Japanese and French to monitor news wires as well as the Western and Japanese press to keep up to date with the latest developments. I used advanced-level Japanese to discuss and suggest articles to the correspondents and organise and participate in business trips in the UK and Europe. I also took charge of general administration: settling utility, phone and rent bills, filing, maintaining good business relationships with our suppliers as well as keeping the office well supplied and clean. Volunteer mentor and extra-curricular tutor
-
Jan 2015 - Jul 2015
Salusbury World's mission is to support and empower refugee and migrant children, young people and families to overcome obstacles, realise their rights and potential and participate fully in society. I volunteered to mentor and assist a 14 year old Bulgarian boy with his school work as he was struggling at school as he found the English curriculum very challenging due to his non-native English as well as coming from an unstable family background. I helped him with reading and English practice as well as assisted him with history and religious studies homework. I sensitively but assertively encouraged him to complete his work and balanced confident leadership with a strong awareness of cultural and language issues in order to surmount the obstacles which he faced. The program was very effective and as a result he was able to engage more with his work and school life. Show less

English Instructor

Aug 2012 - Aug 2014
I taught 40 minute English lessons one to one to people from 11-85 in Tokyo for two years. This self-employed role required me to have excellent adaptability and entrepreneurial skills. It was a target driven role requiring a client-centered approach. While some clients confidently lead the conversation, others preferred to be guided. It was therefore imperative that I adapt and discover what best suited them in order to satisfy their expectations. I consistently met and exceeded my business quotas resulting in monthly appraisals of outstanding which allowed me to increase my pay band three times. I attribute this success to excellent adaptability, patience and perception. It was also a fantastic opportunity to learn a lot about the workings of Japanese society through the many people I taught every day. Show less

English and Maths Teacher

Sep 2011 - Aug 2012
I taught in a private, international primary school where I taught English and mathematics to children aged 2-12. I effectively balanced cultural sensitivity, empathy and adaptability with confident leadership and an exceptional ability to control situations to excel in my position. I planned lessons and devised schemes to encourage excellent performance as well as created homework and surveyed and disciplined very often difficult and misbehaving children. I also played a lead role in the school’s business plans and did translation work for the school website. Parents regularly observed my lessons, praising my contribution to the school and the management team. Through this fast-paced, very responsible position I also developed fantastic organisational and time keeping skills. Show less
