My role at KCC on the graduate planning scheme allowed me to gain extensive knowledge of planning by working in 6 month placements across three different departments. With the Mineral and Waste Planning Policy team I was involved in developing the Minerals and Waste Sites Plans in accordance with the Kent Mineral and Waste Local Plan. I assisted in developing the methodology in which to assess sites submitted as part of the 'Call for Sites' exercise and then I tested this methodology when i assessed the submitted sites. I was also responding to consultations regarding mineral and waste safeguarding in which I had to apply and enforce the polices of the Kent Mineral and Waste Local Plan in regards to planning applications and development planning documents. In the second 6 months I worked in the Regulation 3 Planning team in which I determined applications submitted by schools. The planning applications ranged from swimming pools to footpaths. This gave me excellent experience in understanding the processes involved in the determining planning applications. The third placement was with the Strategic Planning and Infrastructure team. In this team I responded to strategic planning consultations ranging from Local Plans to strategic planning applications to NSIPs. Within the team I gained excellent knowledge in the DCO process to enable KCC to be involved in the process at right time with the right representations. Show less
