As an Education Coordinator, I'm well-rounded in administration, education, and marine animal care. My current occupation allows me to engage and connect with the local community in Walla Walla, Columbia, and Garfield counties. I engage with schools, after-school programs, local businesses, and community centers. My education program serves local youths from k-12th grade. A demographic my schedule strides to help our kids and families who come from low-income and underserved communities. Under our organization's mission for education, our goal is to educate and spread awareness about local salmon populations that run through local rivers in our service areas. To prepare youths to care and be better stewards for their local salmon, an essential tribal and significant animal on the South East Side of Washington State. Steelheaders created the program as a STEM-interactive-based curriculum to have students learn from actions, problem-solving, and group collaboration. A unique feature of our education program, Salmon in School, is a free aquarium set-up to grow and care for salmon. Students observe, feed, and raise 150 salmon from the egg stage to their juvenile stage for an entire academic school year. A large portion of my job is to allocate funds, purchase materials, and volunteer management. Students who care for their classroom tank go through vocational training designed to prepare kids how to watch for their salmon and learn the science behind maintenance care. As of 2022-2023 school year, my program has 21 classrooms to manage. With an increase in schools that join the program, interns and AmeriCorps assistants. My internship program provides training on leading classrooms, classroom management, lesson plan designing, aquarium care, salmon education, and teaching methods behind environmental science.
