Alex is a top student in my big data class, where we dig deep into hadoop, pig, hive, Spark, AWS, & cloud computing. Alex's performance in my class just blows my mind - he lost a total 5 points in two exams combined (each worth 100). This was unprecedented because I not only tested them many conceptual questions, but also gave them datasets and they had to spin up a virtual machine and solve problems by writing actual hadoop/pig/hive/spark codes. His team project illustrated what he is capable of: his team trained a recommender model using a million-user song data set. They set up shop on AWS and wrote Spark codes to train an ALS-based recommender model. The project was completed with a user interface that they built using Python that can make interactive song recommendations.

I worked with Alex on a predictive and exploratory data analytics project for Mall of America. Alex was instrumental in designing the predictive analytics solution where our aim was to predict ridership for Mall of America's Nickelodeon Universe business. His ability to build a robust model using various ensemble and stacking techniques really impressed me. His understanding of predictive models such as support vector machines, k-nearest neighbors, gradient boosted machines and random forest helped us design effective predictive models. Additionally, he is highly adept at various machine learning, data manipulation and visualization techniques. He used these skills for feature engineering in our predictive project and finding actionable insights for the exploratory project. Lastly, he showed great leadership skills throughout the length of the project by making sure timely execution of the project and motivating the team to build a valuable solution for the client. He is an asset to any team he is a part of and I would highly recommend him for any Data Science/Analytics role.

While in my Master in Business Analytics program I performed a number of projects and case competitions to further my analytics knowledge, among these were; Rider Forecasting - Mall of America: • Built stacked predictive models to forecast the number of riders who will come to the park per day using random forest, Gradient Boosted Machine and Support Vector Machine models. • Improved daily staffing accuracy by 20% and reduced the error in annual revenue forecast by $1.6 M through creative feature engineering. Predicting Corporate Culture Using Glassdoor Reviews : • Built Python script to web scrape 10,000 Glassdoor reviews from the Fortune 500 companies and trained Naïve Bayes classification models using Natural Language Processing to predict an employer’s corporate culture. • Applied K-Means clustering model to synthesize findings and highlight similar clusters of companies. MinneMUDAC 2017 Case Competition – Predicting High Cost Diabetes Patients: • Analyzed medical and Rx claims data to identify the lifecycle of costs which occur for a diabetes diagnosis, presented to panel of 200 industry judges and received the ‘Discovery Award’ for exploratory analysis. • Built random forest machine learning model to predict which patients would be highest cost within the next 12 months, which achieved highest accuracy and F-measure scores across 20 Graduate teams and 17 undergraduate team.
