  at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic the leisure and entertainment sector were forced to close, this meant that the theatre at cockburn was also forced to stop any events that were planned for the near future. luckily I was in a position to be able to change job role to Facilities assistant. this meant I was working closely with the facilities team to help make sure the school was in a clean and safe condition and always ready for staff and students to come into. my responsibilities have included the testing of fire and security systems in the building and making sure all fire detection/prevention systems are triggered during the tests. working alongside the facilities manager to create a schedule so that we know exactly who contractor wise will be on site and what equipment is been serviced and or repaired. we use a system called smartlog which is an online reporting software which staff use to record any issues that may arise in the building and this is checked regularly so that we can keep on top of the tasks. we also make sure that any planned maintenance gets done as soon as possible so that we can leave time for any reactive maintenance that may crop up. I have since been Working towards a level three qualification in facilities management which I hope to complete in the next six months. in September this year I will become Site Manager at our new high school which I am hoping will be a good step into the role. with this been a brand new school we will be starting off with one year group and this will help me transition into the new role with a completely new team and I am looking forward to the journey ahead.   my role of Theatre Technician at Cockburn Multi Academy Trust was to support the arts (music,dance and drama) departments in any events or teaching that was requiring technical help. this included showing staff and students how to use equipment in a state of the art recording studio which includes how to use pro-tools and equipment such as a focusrite scarlett through to a live mixing console such as the control 24 surface. my other duties include provide lighting and sound expertise for the shows put on by the staff and students throughout the MAT and to make sure all equipment such as rigging apparatus and hoists are serviced and maintained all year round.   I first took interest in lighting and sound at Cockburn school when I joined there as a student in 2006, after leaving in 2011 I went on to do a lighting and sound course level 3 Btec at Leeds City College and came out of that course with a Distinction and 2 Merits. after leaving college I went on to work at Subway as a sandwich artist for a year, after the year I was then made team leader and carried on working there for another 6 months. after leaving Subway I did an apprenticeship at Cockburn through Leeds city college and passed that then went on to become the stage technician at Cockburn School. my roles varied between departments, I worked closely with the dance, drama and music department and even taught students how to use the recording studio as part of their assessments.
