Exploring and optimizing the use of an alpha-proteobacterium Novosphingobium aromaticivorans to convert depolymerized lignin monomers into 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDC), a platform chemical with potential in sustainable bioplastics and environmental decontamination. This research is developing in the Dr. Tim Donohue and Dr. Dan Noguera lab and is guided by the mission of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) to create sustainable and economically viable products from bioenergy crops into promote a greener economy. Creating and analyzing composites of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) with nanocellulose fillers (NCF) under the supervision of Dr. Joshua Yuan, Dr. Wei Liu, and Dr. Susie Dai. Our research is focused on enhancing the mechanical strength, specifically tensile strength, of PHA for potential uses as a replacement to conventional plastic. By developing samples of PHA with various NCF concentrations, PHA polymers, casting methods, and more, characterization and testing of the composites will help determine how the addition of NCF affects the physical properties of the material. Interdisciplinary research led by Dr. Lindsay Sansom and the Borlaug Institute at Texas A&M University for the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Small Scale Irrigation (ILSSI). Gathered current literature on the use, considerations, and impacts of cold storages designed for smallholder farmers in Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America. Created a literature review on cold storage technologies implemented and designed to help rural farmers around the world to reduce global food waste and lack of resources available to underdeveloped regions everywhere.
