Bio
Mike Keliher
Alex is a great creative mind who managed to make copywriting, video production, creative concepting and more seem utterly effortless. We’ve all spent time in brainstorms with people staring at their laptops or just plain giving up after 20 or 30 minutes. That’s not Alex. He’s the one who keeps pushing, digging, asking questions until we start getting somewhere – a powerful force to have at the table. And whether he’s writing headlines, ghostwriting in a client’s voice, coaxing a powerful story out of an on-camera interview subject, batting ideas around with an art director, or just helping make sure someone else’s work is as strong as it can be, Alex gets the job done with style and polish. He’s a great asset to any creative team.

Morning Show Host
-
Jun 2009 - Jun 2010
I served as morning show host at Radio K for one year, during which time I learned the art of writing, producing and performing a three-hour show every morning. I recruited and trained co-hosts and interns, took requests and planned playlists while researching and producing music-oriented segments. I revamped old featurettes and created new ones; I took requests and gave away tickets; I yawned a lot. I don't think I ever swore on air. I learned to survive on a thermos of ultra-black tar coffee.

Multimedia Fellow, MPR News
-
Sep 2010 - Dec 2010
The multimedia fellowship I participated in was a collaboration between MPR News and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Minnesota. I pitched, shot, edited and uploaded video stories for the primarily radio-based network. I was one of the first two fellows, so I had a fair amount of room to determine my own track. Over the course of the semester, my videos covered the decommissioning of a Girl Scout camp in Wisconsin, the 2010 midterm elections, and the growth of the Minneapolis bike share program, among other topics.

I was responsible for managing the music database for Minnesota Public Radio's regional indie music service. My work involved attending a weekly music meeting, where each week's new additions were selected. From there, I took the physical copies of the newest singles and uploaded them into Netia, a digital delivery system. After filling out metadata and trimming songs down for airplay, they'd be ready for DJs to spin. I also created the corresponding song entries in MusicMaster, the scheduling software used by radio stations across the country. I'd also help with in-studio performances, schedule giveaways and promotional messages and occasionally contribute on-air talent.
