For over half a decade I have assisted with the editorial and production process of a wide variety of non-fiction titles, with subject matters ranging from motoring to sport. Crowood publishes around 50–60 of these a year. In more recent years, these responsibilities have expanded; I now handle a higher number of titles at an earlier stage, using an editorial management guide. These increasing responsibilities were gained while managing the production of the Black Horse Western fiction imprint, of which six were published every single month. I communicate directly with authors as well as freelance copy editors, proof readers and typesetters to help each title become the best possible product. Show less

I contributed news pieces to the organisation's website, Facebook page and other social media. I submitted interviews and reviews of albums, singles, concerts and festivals, as I did in my previous roles in journalism. Throughout my music journalism experience, I kept to deadlines and created varied contributions to each publication with a mixture of length and depth in my articles. Between Crowood contracts, I worked for Bloomsbury Publishing as an intern for a 4 week period. This expanded my outlook further and enabled me to build further contacts. I spent 3 days a week, for 6 weeks, at Harlequin publishing house's UK division headquarters in Richmond, London. The company specialises in romance novels for women, with the numerous Mills & Boon series know to generations. I worked on Art Fact Sheets, pulling out key sections of novels (character descriptions, notable scenes, synopses, etc.) to enter into Harlequin's ever-expanding electronic database. The information I recorded aids the art department in composing the novels' covers, in series ranging from Historical to Modern, from Medical to Cherish. To expand my own general publishing knowledge and assist the team, I attended meetings, gaining an understanding of metadata practices within the industry, including BISACs and keywords. I added further administrative and creative support to aid the continuing success of Harlequin. I devised and wrote back cover copy and assisted artwork briefs, proofread and inputted data, among other activities. Editorial assessment and the acquisition process was also covered, as was author development and management. Additionally, I studied the editorial production process from unedited manuscripts to the finished copy, and analysed release schedules. Throughout my time here, I gained fuller knowledge of the romance genre and Harlequin's numerous series, particularly those sold in the UK and in North America. Show less

During my month at one of the UK's most popular rock music magazines I established new skills, including the use of the 'ExpressionEngine' content management system. I utilised it to type and upload news stories, reviews and features to the Rock Sound website on a daily basis, creating eye-catching headlines and informative content. I made use of Photoshop, a programme which I was previously relatively unfamiliar with, to manipulate and resize photos to accompany the online articles. Additionally, some reviews and other features of mine made it into the November 2014 issue, available physically and digitally. Show less

Here, I continued to write up news piece, interviews, reviews of albums, singles, concerts and festivals with a new team. I improved my own writing skills and maintained press contacts while working with Mutiny colleagues, furthering my determination to continue a career in media. The bands I interviewed during this period include members of: Parkway Drive; Bullet For My Valentine; We Came As Romans; The Maine; Handguns; Decade (twice). My first position in journalism was an interesting one since it was a new field of work for me. I learnt the basic skills of writing reviews to correct publication styles, as well as interviewing my first musicians. The high point here was attending Slam Dunk festival in May 2013, where I stayed in the press area for long periods, interviewing bands of different genres in quick succession. As well as having to bond with these people quickly, I had to vary my tone of questioning depending on the style of music they played. The bands I interviewed during this period include members of: Your Demise (twice); The Ghost Inside; Four Year Strong; All Time Low; Transit. Show less
