Towards a Bio-based Manufacturing Platform for High Strength Aramid (Aromatic Polyamide) Synthetic Fibres Using Synthetic BiologyThe aim of this project was to establish a bio-based synthesis pathway for the manufacture of new aramid polymers akin to Kevlar. My primarily role was the processing of the biosynthetic precursors into liquid-crystalline polymer dopes and spinning into high-strength fibres.

Active recombinant reflectin materials for adaptive camouflageCertain cephalopods can modulate the structural colour of their skin through assemblies of proteins termed reflectins. This project, contracted by BAE Systems, aimed to explore the capability and limitations of reflectin-based materials and coatings for adaptive camouflage in a modern military setting.

Tough recombinant spider silk/graphene multifunctional nanofibres for wearable personal protectionThe project, funded by the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), involved the biosynthesis of recombinant spider silk proteins and their processing into tough nanofibers through a technique known as solution blow spinning (SBS). My primary role was to develop the SBS procedure and optimise the silk dope formulations, with the goal of enhancing the strength and toughness of the fibres for applications in wearable personal protection (body armour).

Advanced Functional Porous Materials for Energy Storage ApplicationsSupervised by Dr. Haifei Zhang and Dr. Li XuThe primary focus of the PhD was the development of a relatively benign and commercially viable route for the fabrication of porous carbon and carbon-composite materials, utilising a technique known as ice-templating. Several working systems were developed and optimised, and the prepared materials were evaluated for functional energy storage applications – such as Li-ion, Li-sulfur and supercapacitor electrodes, as well as materials for H2 and CO2 capture and storage.
