The Tellus Border Project is an INTERREG IVA-funded regional mapping programme that collects airborne and terrestrial data on the soils, water and rocks of the six border counties of the Republic of Ireland. My role involves the ecohydrological characterisation of wetland habitats on both sides of the border, combining surface and ground water data with biotic (macroinvertebrate, zooplankton, phytoplankton and vegetation) data to produce an holistic characterisation of wetland habitats. This involves conceptual modelling and GIS and statistical data analyses, with the aim of supporting and guiding conservation designations and management processes. Show less

    • Coordinator, Ecological Investigations
      • Oct 2009 - Jan 2012

My role as Coordinator, Ecological Investigations, for the South Australian Governmental Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) involved providing robust and defensible scientific advice on the conservation management of the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth (CLLMM) region: a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance which exists at the terminus of Australia's longest river, the Murray. This position involved me leading an application which successfully attracted AU$5.56 million funding from the Australian Federal Government to support an in depth monitoring and research programme. This required working in a multidisciplinary team of hydrologists and ecologists to determine wetland environmental water requirements, develop research and monitoring frameworks and design, manage and administer research and monitoring programmes. Other key aspects of my position included providing catchment-level recommendations for the protection of aquatic ecosystems and water resources, identifying and liaising with stakeholders, managing staff and budgets and representing DENR at State and Federal meetings and workshops. For example, I represented the state of South Australia at national fora on the Murray-Darling Basin Plan (a revolutionary approach to water resource management in Australia, similar to the EU Water Framework Directive) and National State of the Environment reporting. My role at Flinders University involved working on two key projects: - CLLaMMecology: Investigating the response of key benthic invertebrate species to changes in environmental conditions such as salinity, nutrients, tidal exposure and predator pressures in the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth region. - Investigating the ecological impact of an invasive marine tubeworm, Ficopomatus enigmaticus, in the freshwater Lakes Alexandrina and Albert in South Australia. • Postdoctoral Research Associate
      • Nov 2004 - Apr 2006

I was successful in attracting external funding from the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) to continue in Maynooth as a postdoctoral research associate based on the results achieved in my PhD thesis: “Distribution, Relatedness, Fitness and Behaviour of Entomopathogenic Nematodes from Bull Island, Dublin”. This postdoctoral position involved investigating the population ecology of insect-killing nematode worms in an Irish sand dune system using molecular analysis (AFLP) of nematode populations. I also examined the impact of biotic factors (e.g. predators, parasites, soil moisture) on nematode species and populations, and explored the theory between sex and parasitism. Show less
