      • May 1990 - Present

Currently specialist on foot-and-mouth disease vaccine quality control, epidemiology and virology. I started my research on Bovine Viral Diarrhoea, but moved to vesicular diseases (foot-and-mouth disease and swine vesicular disease) after 2 years. My thesis was on swine vesicular disease pathogenesis, diagnosis and epizootiology. After finishing my thesis I mostly worked on foot-and-mouth disease diagnostics, transmission and vaccine efficacy testing. The experimental studies on transmission provided the basis for risk-based models that were used to optimise the Dutch contingency plans for foot-and-mouth disease. More recently the focus has shifted to quantification of cross-protection with intra-serotype heterologous vaccines. Show less

    • Consultant for Rinderpest post-eradication activities
      • Jan 2016 - Jul 2016

As part of my sabbatical I joined the Rinderpest Secretariat in Rome (see www.fao.org/ag/rinderpest.html). Rinderpest is the first animal disease that has been eradicated globally. There is still a small risk that the disease might re-emerge when virus held in laboratories is released, therefore we work on: • Advocating the destruction of sequestration of laboratory stocks of rinderpest virus • Supporting destruction and sequestration of laboratory stocks of rinderpest virus • Creating awareness on the risk of re-emergency of rinderpest and recognition of transboundary animal diseases • Preparing an international preparedness plan • Provide support to the creation of an international rinderpest vaccine reserve Show less
