I completed a doctorate in Stanford University's Department of Anthropology. My research focused on collective action issues in natural resource management, specifically customary fishing reserves in Aotearoa New Zealand that are co-managed by local indigenous groups and Fisheries New Zealand. I was interested in the social and ecological outcomes of local attempts at self-organizing within this management system. I implemented a mixed methods approach in my project, including ethnographic, spatial, and social network data collection. My research informed our understanding of the factors that foster and maintain collaborative resource management amongst diverse stakeholders. I spent a total of 17 months at my field site in Aotearoa New Zealand building relationships and collecting data. Show less
