Aidan Bush
Alan Halaly was an invaluable, approachable administration member at The Independent Florida Alligator. He is quick to communicate, readily available and has an utter wealth of knowledge regarding reporting, especially in Gainesville. His attention to detail editing feels comparable to that of a seasoned professional. Given he was recently chosen to be editor-in-chief for the next semester, he seems destined for a long, successful career in journalism.

Alan is one of the most dedicated people I've met at The Alligator. He always puts his all into every project he puts forth, and isn't afraid to give his input for the betterment of the paper. His drive is motivating for many members of The Alligator's Fall staff — including myself. He's passionate about journalism and will always do his best, no matter what position he's in. He's also incredibly personable and takes the time to build meaningful relationships with our staff members, which is so important to a managerial role. I would trust Alan as a member of any team, because I know he would get the job done well!

Multimedia Reporter, Pulitzer Center Fellow
-
Jan 2022 - Present
Through several classes at UF's College of Journalism and Communications, I have produced original stories and multimedia packages for north central Florida's NPR affiliate. My reporting, guided by my professors, has brought me all across the state by car and boat. At WUFT, I also became a fellow at the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting twice, first joining a group of students pursuing stories for Watershed, a collection of stories taking a temperature on the state of Florida's water at the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act. My story — High Hazard — focused on the defunct Rodman Dam in Palatka, which I revealed through public records could cause devastating flooding for homes downstream. The story also features a searchable database for nearby residents to search their addresses to see if theirs is at risk. Working as a multimedia reporter also pushed me to strengthen my skills related to photojournalism, audio production and video work. My work has aired on our local NPR shows. Show less

Climate Change and Environment Reporting Intern
-
Jun 2023 - Aug 2023
As an intern on the city desk, I chased Florida stories on the state’s largest team covering climate change and the environment. Articles I wrote detailed the fight to get Florida’s ghost orchid onto the federal endangered species list, effects of the record ocean heatwave on fish and coral, snapshots of water quality across South Florida, as well as coverage of state preemption on fertilizer ordinances and a bill that gave state permission to use radioactive fertilizer waste in roads. Working in the heart of Wynwood, Miami’s Art District, I was a part of the Miami New Times’ editorial team. During the summer between freshman and sophomore year, I pitched and wrote articles relevant to a South Florida audience, with the same responsibilities as a staff writer. These pieces included a long-form piece about the impact of mass lease terminations in an Edgewater high-rise, coverage of the Surfside collapse, as well as in-person coverage of Rolling Loud Miami. East Gainesville Beat Reporter
-
Dec 2020 - Apr 2021
The East Gainesville community has long been underserved in many ways. Distant from the development clusters near I-75 and UF’s campus, East Gainesville does not receive the same coverage that UF communities do. I was expected to develop and maintain contacts with community leaders and report on development in the area, as well as the complex issues that continue to plague the often neglected communities on the east side of town. Since this beat is brand new in the 2020-21 school year, it required me to build the beat from the ground up, exploring the different routes it could take from dailys to lengthier features. This involved a lot of public service and human interest reporting. Show less

News Assistant
-
Sep 2020 - Dec 2020
News assistants are the first people desk editors go to when a breaking news story happens and a staff writer needs backup. As a news assistant, I learned how to pitch, write and pursue my own stories. I was expected to write 1-3 stories per week, but I often wrote more.In my role at The Alligator, I covered a range of topics on the metro desk, from parties in the COVID-19 pandemic to UF’s use of prison labor to local protests. I regularly was tasked with interviewing city and county officials/spokespeople as well as Alachua County residents. Show less
