After I completed my PhD thesis (2007) I went one step further on my career became Assistant Professor engaged in research and teaching. As a part of my job in the Faculty of Science I am the leader of the Faculty of Science annual expedition to the Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Lakes, to study the ecology and biology of the fauna of these areas with the undergraduate and post graduate students. I taught the courses of Environmental Toxicology, Ecology and Biology of Fishes, and Marine Ecology for the under graduate and postgraduate students. As apart of my research activities during that time, I have evaluated the genotoxic potential of some aquatic fungi on the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus niloticus, (Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, (2010) 73:24–31). Also I have studied the genotoxicity of UV on fishes (Journal of photochemistry and photobiology, (2010) 99:1–8; Fish physiology and Biochemistry, (2010) 36:605–626; and Journal of Fisheries International, (2010) 5:44–53). In the due course, I granted my first scientific project as principal investigator (ID 448, 2009) from the Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF), Egypt. Show less

    • PhD student
      • May 2004 - May 2007

I was awarded a governmental PhD Scholarship to study my PhD abroad. I did my PhD in Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany under supervision of Prof. Frank Kirschbaum. I have submitted my thesis in about 3 years, which is, by international standards, very early. I got the best grade possible for my thesis (magna cum laude). The title of my PhD thesis was (Embryo-toxic effects of lead nitrate of the African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822)). I have investigated the impact of lead on the morphological, biochemical and molecular changes of African catfish embryos using the latest techniques. The quality of my results were demonstrated by the fact that five papers describing the core contribution of the thesis has been published in highly specialized peer review journals (Environmental Toxicology, Fish physiology and Biochemistry, Journal of Applied Ichthyology and Scientia Marina). Even for international research institute it is very rare to have PhD students in this field to get 5 publications out of their PhD research. Show less

    • Assistant lecturer
      • Jun 1996 - Jun 2000

I started my academic career in 1996 as a master student at the Faculty of Science. My master thesis entitled “Taxonomical and biological studies on some species of genus Epinephelus (Family Serranidae) from the Red Sea, Egypt”. In such master study, the inter-specific variations between the selected Serranid species were evaluated in term of morphometric and meristic analysis, electrophoretic proteins patterns, number of isoenzymes, gene frequencies, genetic identity, genetic distance, heterozygozity and genotypes. Results of my M.Sc. thesis were of a quality sufficient for publication at good and specialized national journals. I taught ecology and biology of fishes, aquatic pollution, and aquaculture. I was responsible for the teaching of the practical and field studies courses for the undergraduate students. Show less
