While working for Evari, I further developed my GIS knowledge and learned more about what it meant to be a GIS professional. I spent time creating, editing, and utilizing geodatabases; I collected data in the field via Esri’s Collector app; I create maps and map layouts with both ArcMap 10.7 and ArcGIS Pro; I conducted the QA/QC of data using ArcGIS applications and ArcGIS Online; I digitized whenever needed; and spent time building StoryMaps and web applications with ArcGIS Online during… Show more While working for Evari, I further developed my GIS knowledge and learned more about what it meant to be a GIS professional. In this project, a group of students and I were looking to justify the location of a new after school program for the local elementary school to help the school receive a grant. In the project, we brought various census data into arcGIS, edited and interpreted the data, and then created easy to understand layouts for the principal of the school. Experience Mamoni is an organization based in the Panamanian jungle that promotes the conservation of one of the world’s most important biological corridors. For the company, a team of fellow students and I helped the conservation driven company through field work and data analysis. Parts of the Panamanian jungle fall victim to deforestation from farmers, drug traffickers, and illegal loggers. We gathered data on the potential for carbon sequestration of areas of the forest which we used to show the most vulnerable and environmentally useful parts of the jungle. We also used the data gathered to map where deforestation had already happened which was utilized to help predict where it was likely to continue. Part of our deforestation research was shared with an indigenous population in the jungle who had been pushed and squeezed out of their original territory. By showing them the maps we created, they were able to better illustrate how they had been forced off of their land so that they could present information in the government in a clearer way. My team and I also journeyed into the jungle to gather data on the watersheds of the areas and the potential for pollution from farmers and other human activity. This data was used to create maps on arcGIS to illustrated riparian buffers surrounding the watersheds along with which waterways lacked such buffers. Trail and wildlife data collection was another part of our field research for the area. We used our collected data to create an interactive map using arcGIS which the company could use to encourage visits and investments. The map could help also help future visitors navigate the area while knowing what wildlife they could expect to see.
