I created a web dashboard to display corporate performance indexes using Django. I know Python well enough and do most of my work in Jupyter using pandas, so Django seemed the easy solution for a dashboard. Then I had to connect to Oracle with read-only access. Out of the window went the Django database framework, and I used SQLAlchemy instead. Then I needed to learn CSS and HTML5, because Django won't create webpages by magic. No framework does. Soon enough, I had to add a couple of lines of jquery to auto fit some details in the page according to the size of the browser window. Then I realised Django’s tutorials are geared to server-side templating, which means every time I had to react to an user action, the whole page had to be reloaded. Sounds slow? So I learned proper JavaScript and started coding Single Page Applications, so I could load the page logic once, and only transfer data in response to user actions. Once in JavaScript land, it made more sense using it in the backend as well. So I ditched Django and started using Sails.js in Node. Do I use Python + pandas + Jupyter? All the time. For web development? Very little, mostly as glue between databases. Django? Not anymore. Show less
