PhD student at the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, The University of Sheffield under the supervision of Prof. Per Bullough and Prof. Neil Hunter. Utilise cryo-electron microscopy techniques to gain insight into bacterial assemblies. Specifically the structural characterisation of Clostridia endospores’ outermost layers. • Sample preparation: growing bacterial cultures, protein expression and purification. • Electron Microscopy sample preparation: negative staining, cryo-vitrification, freeze-substitution and thin-sectioning of cells. • Independent user of Philips CM100, FEI Tecnai Arctica TEM • Image processing: Digital micrograph, IMAGEJ, 2dx, FOCUS and IMOD. • Collaboration with other research groups including ITQB University NOVA of Lisbon (Portugal) • Teaching undergraduate courses and laboratory supervision • Managing undergraduate student projects in the laboratory • Science communication at both national and international conferences Show less

I worked alongside a Post-doctoral researcher, Dr Max Zampini, on a gene assembly project. This work taught me some of the basic laboratory techniques such as; handling bacterial cultures, PCR, running DNA gels and using a fluorometer. The results from my internship were acknowledged on Zampini et al., 'RapGene: a fast and accurate strategy for synthetic gene assembly in Escherichia coli', Scientific Reports' (2015).
